In the department of "time sinks I probably didn't need to fall into":
There is apparently a growing kerfuffle in various parts of cyberspace about the plot line of a particular episode of the upcoming Stargate: Universe TV series, for which Hugo-winning writer John Scalzi is a consultant. I happened on a discussion of the matter in John S.'s blog, and -- after holding out for a bit -- failed to resist the temptation to wade in. [Fair warning: as I post this there are 240-odd posts in the reply-stream, and the most significant current subtopic starts about 200 posts in. off to see just how deep in you got!
EDIT oh you are gonna get all kinds of grief for that last one ;>
I gotta admit -nothing about SG:U has inspired me - not the "trying to get home" Voyager issues, not the casting of Carlysle (boy is he NOT O'Neill or Shepherd) - not the "everyone could be a cast member on Everwood (except Carlysle)" issues - there is nothing that is attractive EXCEPT that it claims to be from the same universe and by the same creative team.
So I'll give them a chance.
But I'm not expecting it to be DS"9 (3rd in the series and a show I LOVED - still K's favorite series of the 5 Trek series') - I'm terribly afraid it won't even make Voyager standards - which at least had characters/actors I liked/cared about - even if the stories had their weaknesses....
*sigh*

Date: 2009-08-19 05:48 am (UTC)I don't have cable/satellite either, but I managed to see most of SG-1 via over-the-air syndication, and am (very) gradually accumulating season-set DVDs. I have seen much less of SG:Atlantis, even though it's also in syndicated reruns here -- I'm afraid the "Rodney McKay" character in that one hit me like the proverbial fingernails across a chalkboard.

Not SG1 for my $$, but quite a respectable show.
And really, Woolsey as Head of Atlantis project? That was worth waiting for ;). And it really works!
